Mission Statement
To recruit and retain health care professionals and build healthy communities through educational opportunities and collaborative partnerships.

Program Description
Since the Eastern Shore AHEC began offering rural rotations to health professional students in 1996, the number of students served has steadily increased. Thirty students participated in 1996, increasing to 204 students during the academic year of 2001 - 2002. In the AHEC tradition, all health professional students are welcome. While the majority of students are from the University System of Maryland, students are represented from a variety of programs from other colleges and universities including medicine, dental, pharmacy, nursing, social work, physical therapy and physician's assistant. Health professional students are encouraged to contact the Center for information about clinical sites and opportunities available in respective disciplines not currently listed.

A tracking system to the health professional's first practice location is in place to determine how many students have gone on to practice in small towns or a rural setting. It is anticipated that a significant number of students will decide to practice in locations other than an urban setting.

All clinical education students are invited to participate in the Center's interdisciplinary curriculum that is designed to enhance understanding of the region, develop inter-professional dialogue and collaboration, increase awareness of other health professions and their service as a member of the health care team, and integrate all components in clinical services. The six points of this curriculum include:

  • Orientation to the region

  • Inter and Multi-disciplinary seminars

  • Regional site visits

  • Case presentations

  • Opportunities for interviews with practicing health care professionals

  • Student assessment exit interviews
